Looking back at Lara, he nodded, walking back to her and taking her hand loosely, opening the door slowly, giving her chances to let go and go back. Will continued to the incubator, and rather than pick II up right away, Will wrapped him up in his blanket, the poor baby was still warm, but Will couldn't stand to think of holding him without something else right now. He gently picked up his son and kissed his forehead, choking back a sob that managed to escape. "You're okay now, no more pain." He said before just holding him close for a few good long minutes.

Will looked back at the window and took a deep breath, showing them the bundle that was... had been... his son. Will held II in his arms until Lara was ready to hold him one last time, then that would be it. It would be down to Will and Lara going home and deciding what they wanted to do with II's body. "Ready?" He asked hoarsely.

5 Reasons I should accept Lara and the baby:
1) I am madly in love with her still
2) It is my baby after all
3) I am willing to pay child support, so why not go one step further and be a dad to the baby?
4) I am hurting Lara more than helping her
5) Did I mention I am madly in love with her and she is always on my mind?

Lara held onto Will's hand as he led the way into the NICU, hesitating only a moment or two on the threshold, looking across the room at their son's incubator and swallowing. Will went on ahead and Lara followed at a slower pace behind, hovering a few meters away, watching silently as he wrapped II up in his blanket, the same one Lara had been so intent on giving him that first day. He was so still. She stepped a little closer. He looked like he was sleeping but it felt wrong.

Will was clearly just as upset. Lara noted the choked back sob, heard the words he spoke to their son and closed the rest of the distance wrapping her arms around Will's side, mindful of the still bundle in his arms. It wasn't until he lifted II to show the bundle to their families (Lara noticed her mum, aunt and Liam had arrived as well), that she really got a proper look at their son unable to hold back the sob that bubbled over.

Sinking into the rocking chair that was set by the incubator, Lara was shaking when she held out her arms to take II. Was she ready? Not really but she wanted to hold their son one last time. He felt almost the same as he had when she'd held him the previous day but hen she leant down to kiss his little cheek he didnt squirm. "He's still warm... his cheeks are still pink..." It felt so unreal. She had to she him and carefully unwrapped the blanket a little, searching for those tiny little fingers that had gripped theirs, and those little feet with toes that had curled when they stroked his legs.

Reaching down a finger, Lara did just that, stroking his little leg tenderly, but there was not curling of toes and she chocked back another sob. "He needs his socks... They've taken his socks off, Will. He'll be cold..." She cast her gaze from the incubator to the little cupboard they'd been using for II's stuff, trying to spot them. His small teddy still sat in the incubator, and the photo they'd stuck up. Lara couldn't stop the tears from flowing as she slowly rocked with their son, back and forth in the rocking chair. She didn't want to let him go.

Will hesitated a second with handing II back to Lara because after this, he'd be taken away. When the little boy made his way back to Lara's arms, Will walked away and cleaned out the cupboard, grabbing the bag of his stuff, took the teddy from inside the incubator and removed the picture from the outside of it. Going into the bag he pulled out the camera and waved Carter to come in and he handed the camera over. "Can you develop these for us? I will pay you later." He said hoarsely.

And unlike Liam and Aaron, Carter hugged his brother tighter, both choking back sobs. Carter couldn't stand to see his little brother going through this. "You bet, bud." He said. Carter left the room with the camera in hand.

Before he turned back, Will heard the door open cautiously, and the acolyte looked apologetic. "I am really sorry to interrupt. We'll give you as much time as you need, but we need to know if you want an autopsy to make sure the cause of death." She said.

At first Will shook his head. "I want you to leave him in peace, but I don't know what Lara would like." He said to her as he watched her walk over to his girlfriend. For a moment, Will stepped out of the room and handed his sister II's stuff with the exception of the teddy bear, and told her to just go to his place, round up II's stuff and put it in the nursery to close the door.

Lara continued to rock back and fourth with II nestled in her arms. She felt numb, watching Will emptying II's cupboard of his things - clothes he'd never be put in, nappies he'd never wear and toys he'd never play with. It was heart breaking and to watch him taking the tiny teddy from his incubator and unsticking the photograph. It was almost as if he'd never been there... almost.

The camera. Filled with some of the only memories they would have of II alive. Those were the memories Lara wanted to keep, of those big, round green eyes. His little toes scrunching up when his feet were tickle, little hand gripping their fingers. But pictures weren't the same as the real thing though. Not the same as having a living, breathing little bundle. She was glad they had their families there with them. Watching Will and Carter embracing. "We should make an album... a photo album or a baby box," Lara murmured watching Carter leave the room with the camera. "Can we... ask for a cast of his hand or foot print or something... or a lock of his hair?" She brushed a finger over the soft little tuft atop his head. Again, it wouldnt be the same as having the real thing.

She looked up curiously as the Acolyte approached Will, straining her ears to hear, only picking up on the odd word, autopsy being one of them. Instantly, her arms curled tighter around the still bundle in her arms, shaking her head. "No one is cutting up our son!" Her eyes were wide, voice cracking. "Isn't it enough to know that he's... that he's..." She couldn't finish the sentence.

After Andy had left with her instructions, Will went back to Lara. "No, there'll be no autopsy and my girlfriend would like a lock of hair and also can we so castings of his feet and hands?" He asked gently. The nurse headed off to grab a hospital volunteer to do the job, leaving the parents with their baby.

Will kissed the side of Lara's head. "You're going to have to let him go soon, Lara. They will need to prepare him. Do the things you would like to have as keepsakes, and then he has to go. We should get your discharge papers too and get you home." He told her softly, not wanting to force her, but gently coerce her away. "We have a busy few days, and you need to rest up."

Lara was glad of Will taking charge, in asking the nurse for castings and a lock of II's hair. She didnt think she'd know what to say or be able to stop herself from breaking down again. Already she was so close to doing so and feared opening her mouth would invite the next wave of tears to flood out.

She felt Will's presence beside her, fell him kiss the side of her head but it was his words that caused her to look up from the tiny bundle in her arms, eyes round. They'd only had II for such a short amount of time. They'd been parents for three days. Lara wanted to hold onto him for as long as she could. Forever of she could manage it. She didn't want to let their son go. As soon as they handed him over, that was it; they'd never see him again. His tiny little hands and feet, that tuft of dark hair, those beautiful green-grey eyes that matched his Daddy's...They'd have to say goodbye.

"I don't want to leave him," she found herself murmuring, unable to stop the new wave of tears falling. "I don't want to have to say goodbye." Lara drew II closer, leaning down to brush a soft kiss on his forehead and his little round cheeks. She could still smell that wonderful new baby smell. Home... with the nursery filled with things to remind them of the little baby they'd never be bringing home to settle into the nursery. The crib Will had slaved tirelessly over, the drawers of baby clothes, nappies and toys, the old rocker her mum had dragged from the attic... None of it would be used; it would all just sit there.

Lara knew she'd have to let II go eventually, she just couldn't bring herself to do it.

Will started the gently pry their son away from Lara. "I know you don't, but we need to. This is more painful to be sitting here and doing this to ourselves." He told her, managing to get II away from Lara without jostling him. "I promise they will do what they can to help us. But we need to get you home, Andy is going to lock the door to the nursery until we're ready to go in and do what we have to." He kissed Lara again.

Looking back down at his son, he gave each cheek a kiss as well as his forehead before placing him back in the incubator and taking Lara's hand. "Okay, this is it. I have your hand, and we'll be okay..." he said gently, giving her a gentle tug in the direction of the door.

Lara didn't want to let II go; she didn't want to be parted from the small, warm body in her arms or to never be able to see his little face again. But as Will started to pry II from her grasp, Lara merely tensed, watching her son taken away and set back in his incubator, now bare of personal touches. She couldn't stop the tears. Had it been anyone but Will taking II from her, she would have protested but Will was his father.

She wasn't sure how one got over losing a son, especially one so tiny. She didn't know how anyone could help. Lara felt like a small part of her had been ripped away. "Home's going to feel empty..." They'd been preparing for the last month or so to ring II home and now there'd just be a locked door and a room filled with sad reminders.

Lara felt Will take her hand, her gaze still locked on the incubator. "I don't want to leave him," she found herself repeating again but still, she got to her feet slowly feeling Will's gentle tug towards the door. Lara felt dull and lifeless as her feet followed Will slowly of their own accord, unable to tear her gaze away from II untill they were out of the NICU and back into the corridor, their family gathering around them, offering hugs and words of support. She didnt hear a word they said, she didn't know what to say. Lara was just staring off through the window.

Declan and Kel arrived at the NICU to find that there were still a couple of Acolytes in with their babies. He was a little tense about it, but finally one of them came out, and the smile she was wearing made him sigh with relief.

"You can go in and see them now. They're stable and doing well. Congratulations."

She headed off down the hallway, and Declan and Kel went inside the room. The babies were in side-by-side incubators so that their temperatures could be regulated. They were hooked up to the monitors, and Declan only had to glance at them to feel just that extra bit of reassurance. "Those numbers look really good," he said. "They seem to be doing just fine."

They approached their babies, still red-faced and wrinkled, neither of them with open eyes yet. "So, what do you think?" he asked Kel, not looking away from the babies. "Do they look like the names we picked out?"

Kelly nodded when Declan estated the terms to the compromise. She really didn't want to be wheeled anywhere, and she was really glad that he was giving in to the idea of her walking. Really, it wasn't too bad. She could handle it, especially at the pace that they went down the hall. It was slow, and she was well aware it was because he was going easy on her. She appreciated it.

It wasn't too far to the NICU, and when they arrived there they had to wait outside. Acolytes were still in with their children, and she couldn't see them. Because she was holding Declan's hand, she could feel that he tensed up a little, but looking at him only caught his sigh of relief. It was a second and she realized it was because an acolyte had come out with a smile, and they were given permission to go see them.

She was slightly more hesitant walking into the NICU, feeling sick as she looked at all the tiny, sickly babies in their little incubators in the room. Theirs were side by side, and it took her a few minutes before she could look down at them. It wasn't until Declan asked if she thought they looked like the names that they picked out that she looked down.

They weren't what she was expecting. Kelly wasn't exactly sure what she was expecting, to be honest, but it wasn't the babies that were laying in front of her. She supposed in terms of babies, she thought of chubby, soft skin, wide open eyes and grabbing, curious hands. Everyone knew babies loved grabbing things. These were red, almost chafed-looking, wrinkly and thin. They were still, though their tiny little chests were rising and falling. She could see their ribs.

It made her want to cry. Still, Declan said they seemed to be doing just fine. Kel wasn't exactly sure how they looked like that and was fine, but he was the healer out of the pair of them and she trusted him. Her fingers pressed against the glass as she looked over them, and finally just answered, "They don't look much of anything right now."

Declan knew the babies didn't look extremely healthy, but it could have been a lot worse, so he was really relieved.

"They'll fill out fairly quickly," he assured Kel. "They'll just need to be fed a lot." Caring for premature babies wasn't exactly going to be easy, but it was going to be ok. That was all he was allowing himself to think. In his mind, even though he knew they weren't quite out of the woods yet, they were going to be ok.

"I think the names we picked out suit them," he said. He wrapped a gentile arm around her shoulders as she stood with her hands pressed to the glass, observing their babies with her.

Kelly was surprised at the emotions she was feeling. To be honest, she expected only the apprehension, nerves, and fear. She didn't expect to feel the worry, and the...whatever it was that was making her chest hurt.

Rubbing the area below her collarbone with a fist, she then just did what she always did; take control of a situation, and plan.

"Goodie." Her sarcasm fell short, because she didn't really mean it. No, she wasn't looking forward to the whole breastfeeding thing but she didn't think she'd mind all that much, given that it was going to be helping them. It was something she could do - and only her - to make them healthy.

When Declan wrapped his arm around her, Kel leaned against him gratefully, nodding at his statement. "Okay. So when can I get out of here and when do they get discharged? I don't really have everything they need so that'll have to be done between now and when they can come home, but that won't be a problem."

She'd been carefully budgeting for them. As much as one child was going to be expensive, two were going to be a nightmare if they didn't plan for it.

"I'll talk to my boss tomorrow before the meeting about maternity leave..." Maybe she could take a month of maternity leave, but during her second month that they were supposedly given she could work part-time, from home. Paperwork and the such, like she had done when she was recovering from various illnesses and kidnappings. Literally, she was unprepared for this. She was supposed to have two and a half more months before she had to take off. However, there wasn't much she could do about it at that point, and so a new plan had to be developed.

And she couldn't take her eyes off of their children.

"You can probably go home tomorrow," he said. "I'm sure they'll want to keep you overnight at least, though. The babies will most likely be able to go home within about a week, judging by how they're doing now," he estimated.

"We can definitely take care of getting everything they need. I can even go out tonight and do some of it." At least he wasn't scheduled to work that night, so it wouldn't be a problem for him to go do some of the shopping.

He smiled when Kel mentioned talking to her boss about maternity leave. "Sounds good to me. I'll put in for a little bit of time off as well," he said. Obviously they couldn't have both of them not working for an extended amount of time, but he figured it would be nice for both of them to be home with Corey and Keagan for a little while.

"Good. I'll agree to stay overnight if they'll discharge me at a reasonable time in the morning. Probably between six and eight would be good, because then I could go home and get ready without having to rush. As long as I'm in the office by nine that should be find, I don't expect my boss to take long and the meeting won't either...and then I can wrap everything up afterward." Kel was just thinking outloud; she was probably going to have to take some papers home with her because legally she had taken care of the clients and only she could sign off on it. Paperwork wasn't the problem though, and Declan was saying she had a week to take care of all of this before she was going to be thrown headfirst into parenthood and taking care of not one, but two dependent newborns.

"That would be good. As long as you just get the basics. I mean, we have a lot of stuff, we just don't have the most important stuff yet. And then once I get home from work if you don't have a shift we can go shopping for other things we might need. Whatever makes this...as easy as possible."

Kel wasn't all that composed to be honest, but with both of them facing the two lives they had somehow brought into the world, she didn't think anyone, including Declan, could see.

"I'm tired." She eventually said, and they headed back into her room so she could send off letters letting family know that the babies had been born, and she could sleep.

Four days. Cassie had been kept up in her room for four days. Four long, agonizing days spent without seeing her son for even a second. They wouldn't bring him to her. All they would do was tell her to rest, and then come down to the NICU herself. They actually wanted her to rest when she had no idea how her son was doing? They were all idiots. Still, she'd laid there and she'd rested, and four days later she was on her way to see her son.

She stood outside the door for a few minutes, almost afraid to enter into the room. She'd seen her son as they'd taken him away and he was just so small. She didn't want to see him like that, but she couldn't not see him. So, with a deep breath, she walked in. There were quite a few babies in there, so she'd asked a nurse to tell her where her baby was.

Her heart broke as she saw him, so tiny, hooked up to so many things, unable to even fully breathe on his own. Her fingers touched the glass incubator softly, cursing the stupid thing for blocking her access to her child. With a glance at the nurse, she asked if she could hold him, receiving a nod in response. She carefully disconnected the wires that were not completely vital and set him in Cassie's arms.

It was so strange and overwhelming to be holding a baby like that, a baby that she knew was hers. The child she had wanted for so long was right there in her arms, and he was so much more than she had ever imagined. Even with his eyes closed tightly, and the wires hooked onto him supplying half of his oxygen, she could still see how strong he was. Every breath he took was a fight for survival and she knew at that point that she wasn't going to lose him. He wasn't going to let himself go. He was too strong for that.

Cassie touched his face gently, still obsessing over the fact that he really was hers. She was a mother now, and no one could take that away from her. He was so precious and beautiful. She sat down in a chair that the nurse had brought over, not moving him, but continuing to gaze down at his face. How could something so incredible happen from such a screwed up situation?

"My little fighter..." she whispered, carefully leaning down and kissing his forehead. His eyes cracked open slightly and the tiniest of cries left his lips, and hers filled with tears at the sight. Whether he could actually see her clearly or not, just the sight of his tiny eyes had her emotional. The sound of his cry had her crying as well. "My baby Leon... I love you so much..."

He was her little miracle, her baby boy. And absolutely everything had changed the moment he'd been born. She'd been strong before, but that moment she knew that she could have faced anyone and anything to protect that baby in her arms. She would have done absolutely anything for him.

Cassie would not let him go until the nurse came over and told her it was time to head back to her room. Time to go rest even more, time to let him rest more. After kissing his forehead softly again, she slowly and carefully handed him back to the nurse, who set him in the incubator and hooked the rest of the wires back up. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair that he had to be like that. He should have been a healthy baby boy. And sure, he would be okay, but he should have been okay right that very second. She didn't want to have to wait.

Even after he was placed back in the incubator, she didn't listen to the nurse's advice right away. She stood there, her eyes never pulling away from him, as she watched his tiny body. His chest lifted with every assisted breath and she found her own breath caught in her throat. He was fighting for his life in there, but she knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that he'd be okay. He simply had to be. There was no other way around it, and she wouldn't accept it any other way. Her son was going to be okay. Her baby Leon. Her confidence in him fully strengthened and restored, she finally turned and walked the opposite way. He'd be fine. He had to be.

Jake knew that he wasn`t supposed to do that, but he always had done things he wasn`t supposed to. That was what put him in the position in the first place. Yes, he promised to do as Cassie told him to. She told him to leave – he did. He left her. He wasn`t planning on going to see her anytime soon, he wasn`t planning on talking with her. But he never promised not to follow her. He also never promised to leave baby Leon.

It was strange how he felt towards the child. Months spent dreaming of the day he`d get to see his son and hold him for the first time had an impact on him. The baby didn`t have to be his son, for Jake to feel that way. To him it was his son, no matter whose genes he had. And he wasn`t planning on abandoning his son – ever. Cassie might believe that Jake left, but he still had a couple of tricks up his sleeve that she didn`t had the time to find out. He also had a few personality traits she didn`t know about. Due to his almost insane obsession towards her, she failed to realize that he could be just as selfish and insensitive just as everyone else.

That was why he found a way around his promise. He wasn`t going to do as Cassie wanted of him. It wasn`t fair to him and he didn`t really want to. So, hours after his conversation with Cassie, while half of the hospital was asleep (it was middle of the night, anyway) he snuck inside. Then into NICU. And after that night, he had been doing that every night since.

He managed to stay unnoticed by the Healers or the Acolytes. One of the advantages of being a vampire. He managed to spend a couple of hours with his son every night. And no one could take that away from him. Even Cassie`s wish that he would leave, didn`t involve him leaving Leon. Damn it, even if it did, Jake didn`t care. She didn`t have the right to do what she was doing to him. She never listened to what he told her anyway. It was about time Jake did the same. Didn`t listen.

Though he hated seeing that tiny child hooked to all that stuff and behind a glass. Jake didn’t yet have a chance to hold him, because he didn`t want to harm him. But he had a chance to watch him, talk to him and that was pretty much enough. Damn it, what more could he ask after all that had happened? His fingers brushed against the glass as he watched the tiny chest rise up and down. It wasn`t just a bay. It was a miracle. Jake never questioned that. He crouched down so his eyes would be in the same level with the baby.

”If I don`t get to be your father… at least I`ll be the coolest stalker anyone has ever had.” He murmured softly, touching the glass again. Jake could hear the baby`s heartbeat. Little Leon`s eyelids shivered and slowly opened as he yawned. Jake hated being the weak and vulnerable vampire he was whenever the baby simply moved. And that moment he smiled softly at the baby and closed his own eyes. For some unknown reason the feeling was always bittersweet – it made Jake happy and at the same time it was painfully clutching his heart. But he refused to acknowledge that. To him that feeling was better than the one he felt while thinking about leaving.

After a couple of hours of silent staring Jake heard a sound. Someone was walking down the corridor – it was a sign that it was time for him to leave. The same way he walked in, he left. Cassie didn`t know what she was missing when she told him to go.
